The following story was told to me by an elder friend from the Otoe tribe of Oklahoma. The Whirlwind Several years ago I was in a Native American Church meeting inn the summer time….in Red Rock, Oklahoma. It was in July, 1978 and it was very very hot and there was no wind blowing at all. After the main smoke was made and as the cedar was put on the fire for us to use. The door came open as if someone had opened it (since there was no wind) and it shut…as soon as I shut a small whirlwind began spinning at the entrance of the tipi right behind the logs of the fire….it then began around the logs and between the fire coals and the moon. It slowly went all the way around and exited the fire, coal, and moon area to the place where it began (behind the logs just inside the door.. it then stopped and dropped to the ground…it was quite an amazing experience but no one said a work… in the morning, I asked the chief if he had seen it and explained about what time I had seen it…..he smiled and said "yes" I seen it but I thought I was the only one that seen it. He then explained that it was the spirit that came in to see what we were doing and that the prayers were answered that had been asked by all the men attending the meeting….he told me that I had got to witness a great thing and to remember the holiness and power of our poor church…
