*Adya Sampradaya comes from the Sanskrit Language. Adya means original or primal. And Sampradaya means cherished knowledge given forth carefully. Each edition features articles on healing and personal growth, traditional wisdom from around the world and the news that affects our lives. "Ben Oofana is one of the most genuine people I have ever met. He walks his talk and it all comes from his heart." "Ben helped me get my life back. When we first met I was a confused, angry and broken person and my body reflected all of this pain. I was also very determined to heal. Session by session, Ben gently and patiently guided me through the process of opening up to the pain, releasing it and replacing it with what was important to me. I began to feel less fragmented, more whole; living less in the past and more in the present.
Ben’s medicine is strong; it is a process that requires commitment and taking responsibility for yourself.
That is true healing.'
"I had a very difficult childhood and before meeting Ben I often felt that I was looking at the world through a window, or that it was only a dream. I also had a low tolerance for stressful situations and would be completely worn out after a tough day.
After two sessions with Ben I noticed that I no longer had the feeling of being separate from the world around me and I cope with stress and conflict much more easily now."

Holding It Together Spending time in China, India and Sri Lanka has made me conscious of the fact that we really don’t need so many material possessions to enjoy our lives. People in developing nations may not have so much stuff or enjoy as many of the personal freedoms as we do in the West. But they really appreciate what they do have. I also find a genuine sense of contentment among many of the people that I encounter. That’s given me a real appreciation for the simplicity with which many of these people are living their lives. Severely malnourished children have approached me on numerous occasions in other parts of the world to beg for food or money. It’s upsetting to me to see a child having to live under such conditions. And yet I feel a greater sense of culture shock as I return to the United States and see the excessive waste and consumption that goes on. I always think of the children who are not getting adequate nutrition and who do not have the opportunity to get an education that would lift them out of the cycle of poverty.
Grocery stores here in America throw out huge amounts of edible food every day. And then I see so many people living in their mc mansions, driving expensive gas guzzling cars, watching televisions the size of windshields and buying inordinate amounts of other unnecessary stuff. Annie Leonard says in her video "The Story of Stuff" (http://www.storyofstuff.com/) that we Americans are consuming about 30 percent of all the world’s goods and resources. She then goes on to talk about the devastating impact that our rampant consumption is having upon the people and the environment in the developing nations where most of our stuff is being manufactured. We can get along just fine without all the latest fashions, toys and the tons of other stuff that we continually buy. Many of us have become so disconnected from our soul and we’ve lost that connection with other human beings that allows us to feel nurtured. We continually buy more stuff because we feel so incredibly empty deep down inside and we’re looking for something to fill the void within us. Sri Lanka has been caught up in a brutal civil war for over three decades. The war has taken a devastating toll on Sri Lanka’s economy. But Sri Lankan’s have adapted to the economic hardships. Life goes on and the people of Sri Lanka continue to make the best of what they do have. Americans and people of other developed nations have enjoyed the highest material standard of living that has ever been known in the history of our planet. Many of us have been living precariously above our means for decades. We’ve built much of our economy on a shaky foundation of credit. It was only a matter of time before the bubble burst. The excessive greed, corruption and poor judgment of the leaders within our financial institutions and our government and the lack of personal and financial accountability of borrowers has finally pushed our economy over the edge. Our economy has cratered and now people are losing their jobs. Some are also losing their homes and the money that they had worked so hard for and set aside for their retirement. Panic has set in and many people are cutting back and wondering how they are going to make it. I was working with a woman recently who lost her job when New York City’s board of education started cutting back on their services. Marta told me that her body was feeling very tense and that her stomach was cramping. Marta said she didn’t know what was going to happen and she felt that there was nothing that she could do. The increase in the price of gasoline and other living expenses were only adding to Marta’s sense of overwhelm. Marta would spend considerable amounts of time in front of the television or find other means of escape. And I could see the stresses and unresolved emotions that were collecting in her body. I asked Marta to bring her financial and employment situation into her awareness, to notice any feelings that surfaced in response to what’s happening and then to breathe into these feelings. Marta said that she was experiencing a tremendous amount of fear, anxiety and a feeling of being up against the wall. The economic collapse has also had a negative effect upon my own practice and I’m hearing the same thing from many other retailers and service providers. I felt very concerned, when things slowed down in August and September and I wasn’t sure if I would have enough money to make it back to Oklahoma for the vision quest. But people started calling and scheduling appointments and I did better than I expected. I’ve been going on vision quests twice a year for many years now. It can cost me up to $900.00 by the time I pay for the plane fare, rental car, gasoline and hotel. Fortunately, I got a good deal on the air fare and the rental car. The price of gas also started to go down, so I was able to go back to the mountain for less expense than I anticipated. Being on a mountain without food and water for four days and nights can be absolutely hellish at times. But I continue because that’s how I’ve developed the gifts of healing that enable me to assist others. I’ve also gained many other resources that are enabling me to do more of what I want and need to do. I see people internalizing so much stress over the course of their lives. Many of the issues never get resolved and the stress just accumulates in the body. I do so much intensive practice, but it takes so much to keep up with everything that happens these days. I start to feel the wear and tear and the accumulation of unresolved issues and emotions. I’ll be sitting up there on the mountain and in spite of all the discomfort, there are times when I’m feeling very thankful for the opportunity to come back, because I realize how much I really need the healing. I can feel these other forces or beings helping me to process huge volumes of old issues and emotions. I always feel a huge sense of relief afterwards. Like most people, I’ve been forced to cut back on a lot of things. But my first commitment is to my own growth and development. I will do whatever it takes to continue with the vision quest, the training I do in Chinese martial arts and the other things I do for my own healing and personal development. Many of us are struggling. We may feel uncertain about the future and we really don’t know how we’re going to make it. The economic realities that many of us are facing now are generating tremendous amounts of fear, anxiety and stress. And that can leave us feeling very unsettled. I saw friend that I haven’t seen in some time whose retail business is struggling because of the economic downturn and that’s caused her a great deal of financial stress. My friend told me that she was focusing on a positive outcome. But it was quite obvious that the stressful feelings were not getting processed. I could readily see and feel the fear and uncertainty pertaining to money that was causing her consciousness to contract as I looked into her physical and subtle bodies .We’re not taught how to deal with our stress and emotions. And most people do not have the understanding or the capacity to process what’s happening. Many of us are attempting to push the feelings out of our awareness but that’s not helping matters. Stress and unprocessed emotions are accumulating within in our body . Fear and financial stress freezes up inside of us. Our body and mind contracts, which impedes the flow of creation and we stop growing. We only hurt ourselves when we resist our fears. Fear is not the enemy. Fear serves a very useful purpose when it calls our attention to changes that need to be made or issues that need to be addressed. Our fear can actually become a source of inspiration and motivation when we learn to work with it constructively. Fear, anxiety and feelings of uncertainty are normal responses to what many of us are going through. But we need to digest our feeling responses so that they don’t get trapped in our body and shut us down. Feel yourself letting go of all resistance to what’s happening in your life. Stop resisting your fear and stop trying to make the feelings go away. Allow yourself to be fully present with your feelings as they are. Feel yourself fully letting go as you breathe softly and deeply into the fear, the underlying sense of uncertainty or the feeling of not knowing what’s going to happen or anything else that surfaces .Our reality is changing and we really don’t know how things will turn out. Many things will no longer work the way that they use to. We need develop new resources and capabilities and to come up with new solutions to address the challenges facing us today and in the days to come. Our bodies and minds need to go through a process of reorganization to enable us to adjust to the changes that are taking place in our world. We need to develop a tolerance for uncertainty because we really don’t know what’s going to happen. Feelings of uncertainty and fear of the unknown will often intensify as we first begin to breathe into them. It can take some time, but the feelings will gradually dissipate as we continue to breathe into them. Breathing into the feelings will initiate a process within our mind and body that will help us to adapt to what is. This process will also awaken the creative and intuitive parts of our mind and that will enable us to find workable solutions to the challenges facing us at this time in our lives. There have been times in my life when I felt as if things were not working and I was at the end of my rope. I sometimes forget and get caught up in the drama. I have to remind myself to stop and breathe into the fear. I may have to keep doing it for quite some time. But the doors will invariably open up as I continued to breathe into the fear. I gain new insights and see other possibilities and new opportunities present themselves to me. There’s another useful tool that I find works best when used in conjunction with the process that I’ve been describing. I have a habit of asking myself questions and that stimulate the creative parts of my mind that help to provide much needed solutions. I often ask myself questions such as "…What do I need to be doing now? How do I proceed here?" I usually just ask the questions, let it go and then go about whatever I’m doing. And then I get these flashes of insight or inspiration along the way. There’s no shortage of things I can be working on and developing. I’m using my time to do intensive practices that enable me to further my development. I’m also working on my writing and the various other projects that will enable me to share these healing practices with many more people. I have also started offering sessions over the phone. I cannot do all the things over the phone that I can do when I’m working with someone in person. But I can walk people through a process that will awaken the healing intelligence within their own body and mind. This innate healing intelligence will alleviate the symptoms of many digestive and respiratory disorders. It will diffuse panic attacks. This process will also ease the overwhelming stress that many are going through and help an individual to find the resources within that they need to cope with their current reality. It also leaves one with a sense of calm and centeredness. Stop and reflect for a moment… Take time to acknowledge what’s really happening in your life. What are you feeling in response to it? Where are these feelings the strongest within your body? Breathe softly and deeply as you center your awareness within the middle of these feelings. Follow the feelings as they go through their natural progression. At some point you may inquire within as to what direction or course of action would best serve you at this time. Ask the question(s) without any expectation and then go on about your day. The practice of being permeable and breathing into the fear and other feelings will provide you with a very valuable tool that will help you to access your inner strength and the many other resources within that you need to make it in this world. It will also help you to find a place of calm within and to maintain your center in the midst of all the changes that are taking place. Many of us are going through the same kinds of struggle. Everything goes in cycles. There are lots of very talented and creative people who will find the ways to make things work. Things will eventually shift economically. And then we may be forced to develop a whole new economy as the Earth cannot indefinitely sustain the rate of excessive consumption that we have grown accustomed to over the past few decades. Many of us are already so numbed out or desensitized that we don’t recognize the impact that all this financial stress is having upon our body and mind. Many of us are contracting and we will see a tremendous increase in the number of stress related illnesses. Do you ever notice how young people tend to be so much more vibrant and alive? Many of them exude so much presence and enthusiasm and they have a tremendous sense of possibility. They’re also more likely to get out and do things. Have you ever noticed the changes that take place within people change as the years go by? Many of us are forced to endure all kinds of hardships and losses along the way and that wears upon us over time. The accumulation of stress, fear, anger and disappointment can cause us to feel very heavy and lethargic. Do you ever notice how shut down, disconnected and stuck in a rut many people become as they age? That’s what unprocessed stresses and emotions do to us. And we become old so much faster when we fail to process our issues and emotions and care for our body and mind. We need to be realistic about the fact that we can’t do it all on our own. Our bodies and minds can and often do become overwhelmed by the realities of our lives and what we feel in response to everything that we’re going through. We start to contract and our consciousness diminishes. Ongoing stress can also damage our physical and subtle bodies. Much of the stress will remain frozen in our body and mind even after the storm has passed. Our bodies and minds will not bounce back and heal unless we make use of effective healing practices to help us digest these stresses and repair the resulting damage. We sometimes need body work and healing sessions to mend the damage to the body and to help us process all the stagnant energies and emotions that are accumulating within our body and mind. We need healing to help us to develop greater resources to meet the challenges facing us in today’s world, to renew our vision and to keep us back on track. ©Copyright 2008 Ben Oofana.
