Becoming A Healer People often tell me of their desires to become a healer. And I would definitely like to encourage people to go into this work. Most people within our society have little if any point of reference pertaining to "spiritual" healing practices. Most of the esoteric traditions that were indigenous to Western Europe either died out or went underground with the spread of Christianity. Even those practices that survived became very diluted. As a result we have very few resources to draw upon. Because of this we have had to turn to other cultures in an attempt to find what we have lost. Many people in our current American culture want everything to be instant. You can go to workshops where people claim to be offering transmissions of ancient healing powers and receive your initiation to become a healer. After three of these initiations you assume the title of a master healer. How would you feel if you went to an Allopathic physician or a dentist and you learned that the person who is about to perform surgery or work on your teeth only had three weekends of training? We should also keep in mind that the term master refers to individuals within various eastern spiritual disciplines who have undergone years of intensive training to reach very advanced levels of attainment. Some of the most popular spiritual books on American Indian and Australian Aboriginal spirituality are actually works of fiction. But so many people who have never had any direct interaction with these cultures believe them to be factual accounts of indigenous spirituality. All kinds of natives came out of the woodwork, claming to be shamans when the new age movement began. They saw an opportunity to make lots of money off of gullible white folks. There are some truly gifted native healers coming to America, yet so many people seem to be incapable of telling the difference. Much of that is because most of us have little if any exposure to any legitimate indigenous healing practices. The magnitude of the powers that native doctors worked with were so great, that they had to be very selective of who they passed them on to. These powers could become destructive if they were not used appropriately. That's why the native doctors would usually only take on just one, or possibly a few apprentices towards the end of their lives. The process of training that you go through with the native doctors is very intensive. The practices will vary in every culture. My mentor was able to transfer portions of his own healing gifts to me. After that I would have to go out alone into the mountains to fast for four days and nights without food or water. The elders in the tribes have told me many times that you have to earn the right to work with these gifts of healing and that was done by going through the vision quest. I find that going through the vision quest facilitated the changes that needed to take place within me that prepared me to work with these healing gifts. Many people within our modern society think of spiritual healing as "energy work". Just running energy is the most rudimentary form of healing. It requires no gift or special ability and almost anyone can do that. Physical and sexual abuse of children is fairly prevalent within our culture. The trauma resulting from such experiences interferes with the development of various functions of the brain. It can leave very deep scars in the psyche that prevent us from fully developing as individuals. The subtle bodies consisting of the chakras and layers of the aura reflect what's happening in the mind and body. Sometimes the subtle bodies fail to develop or are significantly damaged as a result of the trauma. There are many instances where I've looked into the aura of people after receiving numerous "energy work" sessions. I can see that virtually nothing was done to correct the damage. People are not getting the help they really need and therefore they continue to suffer needlessly. The beings that work through me during the healing sessions assist an individual to diffuse and then predigest the charged emotions associated with emotionally traumatic events. This will enable you to digest and assimilate what has taken place in your life. These beings change or reformat the habituated patterns in the brain that developed in response to emotionally traumatic experiences. At the same time a process of reconstruction takes place in the chakras and layers of the aura. These changes result in a healthier new foundation. This frees an individual up to develop a whole new range of more resourceful and adaptive responses to enable them to better cope with the demands of everyday life and to meet their personal needs. There are many healers throughout the world working on more advanced levels who can facilitate these kinds of changes. Healers within many native cultures are referred to as doctors. These doctors worked with specific powers. Different kinds of powers were effective for treating specific types of conditions. People within these cultures would chose a doctor based on their areas of specialization. These powers were often passed down in the form of a transmission from a mentor to apprentice. Many of the native doctors would receive these gifts of healing when going through experiences like the vision quest. I don't feel that you can really develop these higher level healing capacities without the assistance of a mentor who possesses these healing gifts. There are some individuals who seem to be born with some exceptional gift, but they are the rare exceptions. These practices have largely died out among the native people here in America. And now there are very few people here in America who possess these profound gifts of healing. There is a great deal of variation among healers from other cultures because they are working with different kinds of powers and the kinds of healings that are brought about can be completely different. This is something you can never really understand until you have the opportunity to experience it firsthand. There are many exceptionally gifted healers working in much of South America, Africa and parts of Asia such as the Philippines and Indonesia. You're not going to develop these gifts by going to workshops. If you're truly serious about becoming a healer you may need to travel to some of these places and it may even require living abroad for periods of time. And it will involve years of training, if you are fortunate to find someone to act as a mentor. I began to learn about the Native American doctors when I was fourteen. I started to save money and then took off on my own by the time I was 17. I landed among the Kiowa tribe in Oklahoma. I immersed myself in their culture and began to attend the peyote meetings. It was in one of these meetings that I met my mentor Horace. I spent three years apprenticing with Horace. And since that time I have continued on my own by going through the vision quests.
